I love the Oscars and I dutifully watched them last night. Here is my reviw.
I loved Ellen. I thought she was fantastic. However, I do think she was a bit off of her "nice" game. Her Liza comment just seemed too cutting for her. It was actually really mean-spirited. I know what she was going for, but she was way off. Overall though, I thought she did a fantastic job.
I thought Jared Leto gave a great speech. I was also thrilled the band didn't come on and shoo him off. Brilliant. Why have they done that in the past? We would have missed out on a great speech.
I thought Cate Blanchett was a jerk. This awards season she has come off as nothing but a pretentious actress. I hope this is an Oscar curse and we never see her again. She snubbed Sandra with her comments and I didn't like that. She also seems fake, a jerk, and full of herself. Nope. Don't like her.
Matthew McConaughey looks up to himself? Oh, please. Sidney Poitier can look up to himself. Not you Matthew. Plus, in what world do we live in where Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't have an Oscar, but Matthew McConaughey does? Just glance at their IMDB pages and you tell me how that is fair. Maybe Leo didn't deserve to win for Wolf of Wall Street, however, I wasn't all that impressed with McConaughey's performance either. Annoying. You don't have to like Leo as a person, but his body of work is excellent.
I loved Gravity. I am so glad that it won so many awards. It was also great that everyone, including I think the sound editing people thanked Sandra Bullock. That says a lot about her.
I want to say that I wish it won best picture, but I have not seen 12 Years a Slave yet, or American Hustle, so I will withhold my judgement for another day. From the promos for it, it looked like a beautiful movie.
Lastly, and then I will wrap this up, why in the hell did Will Smith announce best picture? I feel like he paid someone to let him present because he is trying to do damage control on his faltering career. Look, that is what you get when you try to push your no-talent kids upon us. We are not stupid. They are talentless. Maybe, someday, with some hard work they could be, but not just because you own a production company and paid to have your kid in a movie. Go back and accept your Razzie. That's the only award you deserve for awhile. Focus on your own career for a bit.
Ah, one more thing, I'm not a huge fan of Angelina Jolie, but I thought the way in which she walked out Sidney Poitier was wonderful. She was classy, professional, and human. In such a vain society, many would want to hurry him up because he is getting old and maybe a little bit slow. However, she seemed to exude an aura of determined respect for him -- from the moment they walked onto the stage, to the moment she kindly asked if he would like her to read the name. Well done Angelina. Gold star.
